Saddle and Bridle Are Ready: Our Ride Lies Through Dust and Distance

Gird thy saddle and draw up the reins, for the open road beckoneth into the far horizon. Let neither the long miles nor the rising dust stay the steady traveler upon this quiet path. Mount thy trusty steed, heed the cadence of hooves beneath thee, and ride forth.

We are pleased to announce the arrival of Dust and Distance, In the new, bygone age of Saddle and Steam

In a gaming landscape that often demands frantic reflexes and constant high-stakes urgency, Dust and Distance takes a different trail. There is no ticking countdown timer and no finish line waiting at the end of the dirt road. Instead, the game invites you to climb into the saddle, let your mount set out into the open country, and simply enjoy the journey for as long as you and your horse choose to keep riding.

The Open Road: A Living World

At its heart, Dust and Distance is designed as a casual riding experience. The rules are unhurried and straightforward: you ride down a broad, country road bordered by open fields on one side and an old railway line on the other. Your horse moves forward by itself; you never have to hold down an accelerator key or worry about forward propulsion. Your only duty in the saddle is to choose your line, guide your reins left and right, and manage your horse’s pace.

The countryside is filled with everyday rural life coming the other way. You will hear lone travelers on horseback, horse-drawn carriages, and cattle or sheep grazing near the verge. Occasionally, a herd of cows or a column of sheep will slowly wander across the road from the meadows, giving you plenty of advance acoustic notice to gently guide your horse around them or slow down to let them pass. Alongside the road, steam trains roll down the parallel railway, whistling and clattering by without threatening your path.

Every clean pass of oncoming traffic builds your streak and unlocks your horse’s natural gaits. While every ride begins at a gentle walk, you can move up to a trot whenever you feel like it. Clean riding will unlock the canter and gallop, yielding higher score multipliers and faster ground covered. Yet, you are never required to ride at a breakneck speed: if the traffic thickens or you simply prefer a relaxing stroll through the farmland, dropping back to a walk or trot is always just a rein tug away.

Your horse begins each trip with five points of patience. While clipping an obstacle or standing motionless for too long will test that patience, the road also scatters crisp carrots along the path. By homing in on their audio beacons and collecting five of them, you restore your horse's goodwill and keep your peaceful trek alive.

Stepping Into the Saddle: The Immersion of Steam Audio

What truly separates Dust and Distance from a conventional obstacle game is how you perceive this world. Building on the recent advances in our 3D spatial sound architecture, the game leverages Steam Audio to create a genuine acoustic environment rather than a collection of flat stereo cues. read more in this post

Because of this technology, you are not simply sitting at a keyboard listening for directional triggers. You are seated squarely in the stirrups. The creak of leather, the ring of sheep bells drifting over the grass, the breathing of your mount, and the wind brushing past your ears as you canter, transforms the game from an exercise in button-pressing into a relaxing, acoustic escape.
